Hour Types

Concentrated Fieldwork

A fieldwork type with a reduced total hour requirement (1,500 for BCBA, 1,000 or 800 for BCaBA) but higher monthly intensity and stricter supervision percentage requirements.

Definition

Concentrated fieldwork is the intensive alternative to supervised fieldwork. It requires fewer total hours — 1,500 for BCBA (vs. 2,000) and 1,000 or 800 for BCaBA (vs. 1,300) — but comes with stricter supervision requirements and higher expectations for monthly engagement. The reduced hour total reflects the assumption that you are gaining experience at a faster, more immersive pace.

The key trade-off is the supervision percentage. Under pre-2027 standards, concentrated fieldwork requires a 10% supervision minimum, double the 5% required for supervised fieldwork. Under 2027 standards, BCaBA concentrated fieldwork drops to 7.5%, but it still demands more supervision than the supervised track. This means you need proportionally more time with your supervisor, which can be a scheduling and cost consideration.

Concentrated fieldwork is best suited for candidates in full-time practicum placements or clinical positions where they can accumulate hours quickly and have regular access to a supervisor. If your schedule allows for high-intensity engagement and your supervisor has the bandwidth for the increased supervision load, this path gets you to certification faster. But if your availability is unpredictable, the stricter requirements can make concentrated fieldwork harder to manage.

Why This Matters

Concentrated fieldwork lets you complete certification faster with fewer total hours, but the trade-off is stricter monthly minimums and higher supervision requirements. It is ideal for candidates in full-time practicum placements.

Examples

  • A BCBA candidate completing 1,500 hours in a full-time practicum placement
  • A BCaBA candidate completing 800 hours under 2027 standards with 7.5% supervision minimum
