Compliance Rules Explained
Every rule for this pathway broken down. What it means, how it's calculated, and common mistakes to avoid.
Supervision Percentage
What this means
At least 10% of your fieldwork hours in each supervisory period (one calendar month) must be supervised by a qualified BCBA or BCBA-D. This applies to concentrated fieldwork and is measured month by month, not cumulatively. A short month cannot be averaged out by a stronger month later.
How it's calculated
Supervised hours ÷ total hours for the month × 100. Must be ≥ 10% in every supervisory period.
Common mistakes
Assuming a light supervision month can be made up later. Because the percentage is checked within each month, a month that falls short can reduce or forfeit the hours from that month, and no later month can repair it.
How ABA FT handles this
ABA Fieldwork Tracker calculates your supervision rate in real time after every entry and warns you immediately if you drop below the 10% threshold.
Group Supervision Cap
What this means
No more than 50% of your supervised hours can come from group supervision sessions. Group supervision is defined as supervision conducted with 2 or more trainees present simultaneously.
How it's calculated
Group supervised hours ÷ Total supervised hours × 100. Must be ≤ 50%.
Common mistakes
Over-relying on group supervision because it's easier to schedule. By the time you realize you've exceeded 50%, you need to log many more individual supervision hours to bring the ratio back down.
How ABA FT handles this
The system tracks your group supervision ratio in real time and warns you before you exceed the 50% cap.
Monthly Hour Cap
What this means
You cannot log more than 130 fieldwork hours in a single calendar month. The cap is absolute: hours beyond it in a single month simply do not count.
How it's calculated
Sum of all fieldwork hours in a calendar month. Must be ≤ 130.
Common mistakes
Trying to cram hours at the end of your fieldwork period. If you hit 130 mid-month, no additional hours can be counted until the next month.
How ABA FT handles this
ABA Fieldwork Tracker shows your remaining monthly hours and warns you if adding an entry would push you past the 130-hour cap, without ever blocking the entry.
Monthly Minimum
What this means
You must log at least 20 fieldwork hours per month during any month you are actively accumulating fieldwork. This ensures ongoing, consistent fieldwork engagement.
How it's calculated
Sum of all fieldwork hours in a calendar month. Must be ≥ 20 in active months.
Common mistakes
Taking a month off without formally pausing your fieldwork, or logging only 15-19 hours and assuming it counts.
How ABA FT handles this
The dashboard displays your current monthly total prominently and alerts you if you're approaching the end of the month below 20 hours.
Unrestricted Hour Ratio
What this means
At least 60% of your total fieldwork hours must be in unrestricted activities: the analytic work such as assessment, program design, data analysis, report writing, and training others.
How it's calculated
(Independent unrestricted + Supervised unrestricted) ÷ Total hours × 100. Must be ≥ 60%.
Common mistakes
Spending too much time on restricted delivery work (running sessions, implementing plans) without enough unrestricted analytic work. The 60% threshold is cumulative and hard to recover from late in fieldwork.
How ABA FT handles this
Your unrestricted ratio is tracked in real time on the compliance dashboard, with warnings when you approach the 60% threshold.
Supervision Contacts
What this means
You must have at least 6 supervision contacts per month. A supervision contact is a real-time meeting with your supervisor (in person or live video) to discuss your fieldwork, cases, and professional development.
How it's calculated
Count of supervision contact sessions flagged in a calendar month. Must be ≥ 6.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to flag supervision sessions as "contacts" when logging hours, even when they qualify. The contact count is separate from supervision hours.
How ABA FT handles this
Each hour entry has a "Supervision Contact" toggle. The dashboard tracks your monthly contact count and alerts you if you're below 6.
Observations
What this means
Your supervisor must conduct direct observations of your fieldwork at regular intervals. Under pre-2027 standards, observations are count-based per supervision period.
How it's calculated
Number of observation sessions per supervision period. Tracked per the BACB supervision period requirements.
Common mistakes
Scheduling observations too infrequently or forgetting to log them. Observations must be flagged separately from regular supervision.
How ABA FT handles this
Each hour entry has an "Observation" toggle. The system counts observations per period and flags if you're falling behind.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is concentrated fieldwork different from supervised fieldwork for BCBA?
Concentrated fieldwork requires fewer total hours (1,500 vs. 2,000) but demands a higher supervision rate (10% vs. 5%) and more monthly supervision contacts (6 vs. 4). It's designed for candidates in intensive, full-time fieldwork placements.
What is the supervision percentage for BCBA concentrated fieldwork?
At least 10% of the hours you log in each supervisory period (one calendar month) must be supervised. It is measured month by month, not cumulatively, so a month that falls short cannot be averaged out later. If you log 100 hours in a month, at least 10 of them must be supervised that month, double the supervised rate of the supervised pathway.
Is concentrated fieldwork faster than supervised fieldwork?
It requires 500 fewer total hours (1,500 vs. 2,000), which can save several months. However, the higher supervision rate means you need more supervisor availability, which can be harder to schedule.
How many supervision contacts do I need for concentrated fieldwork?
You need at least 6 supervision contacts per month under pre-2027 concentrated fieldwork, 50% more than the 4 required for supervised fieldwork.
