Certification Pathway

The specific combination of certification type (BCBA or BCaBA), standards year (pre-2027 or 2027+), and fieldwork type (supervised or concentrated) that defines a candidate's requirements. There are 8 possible pathways.

Definition

A certification pathway is the specific combination of three variables that defines your fieldwork requirements: your certification type (BCBA or BCaBA), the standards edition you are following (pre-2027 or 2027+), and your fieldwork type (supervised or concentrated). These three choices combine to create eight distinct pathways, each with its own total hour requirement, supervision minimum, monthly caps, and compliance rules.

Your pathway determines everything about your fieldwork experience. A BCBA candidate on supervised fieldwork under 2027 standards follows different rules than a BCaBA candidate on concentrated fieldwork under 2022 standards. The total hours differ, the supervision percentages differ, the observation requirements differ, and even whether you need to track monthly supervision contacts depends on your pathway. Selecting the wrong pathway — or not understanding which one applies to you — can lead to months of mistracked hours.

In most cases, your pathway is determined by your degree program, when you started fieldwork, and your supervisor's recommendation. Your certification type depends on your education level. The standards edition is typically based on when you began accruing hours. The choice between supervised and concentrated fieldwork depends on your availability, your practicum site, and your supervision resources. Once established, your pathway rarely changes mid-fieldwork, so making an informed decision at the outset is critical.

Why This Matters

Your pathway determines everything: total hours required, supervision minimums, monthly caps, and which compliance rules apply. Choosing the right pathway at the start is one of the most important decisions in your certification journey.

Examples

  • BCBA + 2027 Standards + Supervised Fieldwork = 2,000 hours, 5% supervision minimum
  • BCaBA + 2022 Standards + Concentrated Fieldwork = 1,000 hours, 10% supervision minimum
