Roles

Fieldwork Trainee

A candidate actively accruing fieldwork hours toward BCBA or BCaBA certification under the supervision of a qualified supervisor. Also referred to as a supervisee in the context of the supervisory relationship.

Definition

A fieldwork trainee is an individual actively accruing supervised fieldwork hours toward BCBA or BCaBA certification. As a trainee, you are the person at the center of the fieldwork process — logging hours, categorizing activities, meeting supervision requirements, and building the clinical competencies defined by the BACB task list. You may also be referred to as a supervisee, a fieldwork candidate, or a practicum student, depending on your setting.

Your responsibilities as a trainee extend beyond simply showing up and working. You are expected to accurately log your hours in a timely manner, prepare for supervision meetings, actively seek feedback, and take ownership of your compliance status. While your supervisor provides oversight and guidance, you are ultimately responsible for ensuring your fieldwork meets all requirements. If your supervision percentage is low, your unrestricted ratio is slipping, or you are falling behind on observations, it is your responsibility to flag these issues and work with your supervisor to address them.

Many trainees come to fieldwork from backgrounds as RBTs or other direct-service roles. The transition from implementing programs to analyzing, designing, and overseeing them is significant. Your fieldwork period is designed to bridge this gap, giving you progressively more responsibility and independence under the safety net of supervision. Embracing this developmental process — rather than viewing fieldwork as just a box to check — leads to better clinical skills and a more confident start to your career as a certified professional.

Why This Matters

As a trainee, you are responsible for accurately logging your hours, categorizing your activities correctly, and meeting with your supervisor according to the required schedule.
