Unrestricted Hour Ratio
The cumulative percentage of total fieldwork hours that must come from unrestricted activities. BCBA candidates need at least 60% unrestricted; BCaBA candidates need at least 40%.
Definition
The unrestricted hour ratio is the cumulative percentage of your total fieldwork hours that must come from unrestricted activities. For BCBA candidates, the minimum ratio is 60% unrestricted. For BCaBA candidates, the threshold is lower at 40%. This ratio is calculated across your entire fieldwork experience, not on a monthly basis, which means early decisions about how you categorize and log hours have long-lasting consequences.
The ratio reflects the BACB's expectation that the majority of your fieldwork should involve direct, client-facing behavior analysis work. Unrestricted activities — assessments, skill acquisition programs, behavior plans, caregiver training — represent the core clinical competencies you need to demonstrate. Restricted activities support your development but are not the primary measure of your readiness to practice.
Because the ratio is cumulative, falling behind early creates a deficit that grows harder to close. If you spend your first six months heavily focused on restricted activities, you will need to compensate by logging a disproportionately high percentage of unrestricted hours going forward. The math works against you: each additional hour has less impact on the overall ratio as your total grows. The safest approach is to monitor your ratio continuously and keep it above the minimum from the start, rather than planning to catch up later.
Why This Matters
This ratio is calculated across your entire fieldwork experience, not per month. Falling behind early creates a deficit that becomes harder to close as you accumulate more hours.
Examples
- A BCBA candidate with 1,000 total hours needs at least 600 unrestricted hours (60%)
- A BCaBA candidate with 800 total hours needs at least 320 unrestricted hours (40%)
