Compliance Rules

Fieldwork Compliance

The state of meeting all BACB fieldwork requirements simultaneously, including supervision percentages, hour caps and minimums, unrestricted ratios, observation requirements, and contact requirements for your specific certification pathway.

Definition

Fieldwork compliance is the state of simultaneously meeting every BACB fieldwork requirement for your specific certification pathway. It is not a single metric but a composite of multiple rules that must all pass at the same time. These include your supervision percentage, unrestricted hour ratio, monthly hour minimums and caps, group supervision cap, observation requirements, and — under 2022 standards — contact requirements.

The challenge of compliance lies in its all-or-nothing nature. You can pass five out of six requirements and still be non-compliant. A month where you log plenty of hours and meet your supervision percentage but miss your observation minimum is a non-compliant month. There is no partial credit, and there is no mechanism for one strong metric to compensate for a weak one.

Maintaining compliance requires ongoing monitoring, not just end-of-fieldwork review. Each metric operates on its own timeline — some are per-period (monthly caps, minimums, observations, contacts), while others are cumulative (supervision percentage, unrestricted ratio). A compliant month can still exist within a cumulatively non-compliant fieldwork experience. The most effective approach is to track all metrics simultaneously and address any dips before they compound into problems that are difficult or impossible to resolve without extending your fieldwork timeline.

Why This Matters

Compliance is not a single metric but a combination of multiple rules that must all be met. A failure in any one area constitutes non-compliance for that period, even if all other metrics are passing.

Examples

  • Passing all 6+ compliance checks in a given month
  • Identifying that your unrestricted ratio has dropped below 60% and adjusting your upcoming hours
