Observation Requirement

The minimum observation activity required per supervision period. Under 2022 standards, this is count-based (number of observations). Under 2027 standards, it is duration-based (60-90 minutes minimum per period).

Definition

The observation requirement mandates that your qualified supervisor directly watch you deliver services during each supervision period. This requirement ensures that your supervisor has firsthand knowledge of your clinical skills, rather than relying solely on your self-reports and case discussions. The BACB considers direct observation to be an irreplaceable component of competency assessment.

How observations are measured changed substantially between the 2022 and 2027 standards. Under the 2022 standards, the requirement is count-based: you need a certain number of observation instances per supervision period, regardless of how long each one lasts. Under the 2027 standards, the requirement shifted to duration-based: a minimum of 60 minutes of observation per period for supervised fieldwork, and 90 minutes for concentrated fieldwork.

The shift to duration-based requirements addresses a gap in the older system. Under count-based rules, a supervisor could technically satisfy the requirement with very brief observations that did not provide enough time to meaningfully assess a trainee's skills. The duration-based approach ensures that each observation period is long enough for the supervisor to see a representative sample of the trainee's work. For candidates under 2027 standards, planning one or two longer observation sessions per month is usually more practical than trying to schedule many shorter ones.

Why This Matters

The shift from count-based to duration-based observation requirements in the 2027 standards is one of the most significant changes. It means shorter, more frequent observations may no longer meet the minimum.

Examples

  • 2022 standards: complete a set number of observations per month
  • 2027 standards (supervised): minimum 60 minutes of observation per period
  • 2027 standards (concentrated): minimum 90 minutes of observation per period
