Hour Types

Individual Supervision Hours

Supervised hours conducted one-on-one between a trainee and their qualified supervisor. These hours have no cap and are the primary way to meet supervision percentage requirements.

Definition

Individual supervision hours are the time you spend one-on-one with your qualified supervisor. Unlike group supervision, there is no cap on individual supervision hours — they can make up 100% of your supervised time if needed. This makes individual supervision the most reliable and straightforward way to meet your supervision percentage requirements.

During individual supervision, your supervisor's attention is entirely focused on your development. These sessions typically involve reviewing your cases in depth, discussing clinical decision-making, receiving feedback on your direct service delivery, and planning your professional growth. The quality of feedback you receive in individual supervision is generally higher than in group settings, which is why the BACB requires that at least half of your supervision comes from individual sessions.

From a compliance standpoint, individual supervision hours are the safest category to accumulate. They count fully toward your supervision percentage without any cap considerations. If you find yourself approaching the 50% group supervision cap, the solution is always to schedule more individual supervision. Many candidates find a weekly or biweekly individual check-in with their supervisor, supplemented by periodic group sessions, to be the most sustainable cadence.

Why This Matters

Individual supervision is the most straightforward way to accumulate supervised hours without worrying about caps. At least half of your supervised hours must come from individual supervision.
