Supervision

Observation

A supervision activity where a qualified supervisor directly watches a trainee deliver services to a client. Observations have specific minimum requirements that differ between 2022 and 2027 standards.

Definition

An observation is a specific supervision activity where your qualified supervisor directly watches you deliver services or interact with clients in a professional setting. Observations are tracked separately from general supervision hours because the BACB considers direct observation of your clinical skills to be an essential component of your training. Your supervisor cannot meaningfully evaluate your competence without seeing you work.

The way observations are measured changed significantly between the 2022 and 2027 standards. Under the 2022 standards, observations are count-based — you need a specific number of observations per supervision period. Under the 2027 standards, the requirement shifted to duration-based: a minimum of 60 minutes of observation per period for supervised fieldwork, and 90 minutes for concentrated fieldwork. This shift ensures that observations are long enough to be meaningful, rather than allowing brief check-ins to satisfy the requirement.

Observations can take different forms — your supervisor might sit in on a session, watch through an observation window, or join via telehealth video. The key requirement is that they are actively watching you perform behavior analytic work and can provide feedback based on what they observe. Passive or incidental exposure to your work does not count.

Why This Matters

Observations are how your supervisor verifies that you can apply behavior analytic skills in real client settings. They are tracked separately from general supervision hours and have their own compliance thresholds.

Examples

  • Your supervisor observes a 45-minute session where you run a skill acquisition program
  • A supervisor watches you conduct a preference assessment with a new client
