Group Supervision Hours
Supervised hours conducted in a group setting with multiple trainees present. These hours count toward your supervision total but are capped at a maximum percentage of your total supervised hours.
Definition
Group supervision hours are the supervised time you accumulate during sessions where your supervisor meets with multiple trainees at once. These sessions are valuable learning opportunities — you hear about different cases, learn from your peers' questions, and benefit from your supervisor's feedback to the group. However, the BACB caps group supervision at 50% of your total supervised hours.
This cap exists because group settings inherently limit the amount of individualized feedback you receive. When four trainees share a one-hour group supervision session, each person gets a fraction of the supervisor's direct attention compared to a one-on-one meeting. The BACB wants to ensure that at least half of your supervision involves that direct, personal feedback.
Practically, this means you need to track your group and individual supervision hours as separate categories. If you have 100 total supervised hours, no more than 50 can come from group sessions. Exceeding the cap does not trigger an error in the moment — the excess hours simply will not count toward your supervision percentage, which can create a silent compliance gap. Being aware of where you stand against this cap throughout your fieldwork, not just at the end, prevents unpleasant surprises.
