Supervision

Observation with Client

A specific type of observation where the supervisor watches the trainee interact directly with a client during service delivery. This is the most common and most valued form of observation.

Definition

An observation with client is a supervision observation that takes place while you are actively delivering services to a client. This is the most direct way for your supervisor to assess your clinical skills in a real-world context. During these observations, your supervisor watches you implement behavior plans, conduct assessments, manage challenging behaviors, or deliver skill acquisition programs with an actual client present.

Client-present observations are considered the gold standard of supervision because they allow your supervisor to evaluate skills that cannot be assessed in a meeting room: your rapport with clients, your ability to adapt to in-session challenges, your data collection accuracy during live sessions, and your implementation fidelity. These are the competencies that ultimately define your readiness to practice independently.

From a practical standpoint, scheduling observations with clients requires coordination between you, your supervisor, and your clients or their families. Not every client session is appropriate for observation — factors like client sensitivity, family preferences, and the nature of the session all play a role. Planning these observations in advance, rather than trying to arrange them at the last minute, makes it far easier to meet your observation requirements consistently.

Why This Matters

Client-present observations give your supervisor the most accurate picture of your clinical skills. They are often weighted more heavily in compliance requirements than observations without clients present.
