Hour Types

Total Fieldwork Hours

The cumulative number of fieldwork hours a candidate must complete for certification. This total varies by certification type (BCBA/BCaBA), fieldwork type (supervised/concentrated), and which standards apply.

Definition

Total fieldwork hours represent the cumulative number of hours you must complete to be eligible for BCBA or BCaBA certification. This number is the most fundamental requirement of your fieldwork experience, and it varies based on three factors: your certification type (BCBA or BCaBA), your fieldwork type (supervised or concentrated), and which standards you are following (pre-2027 or 2027+).

The eight possible totals are: BCBA supervised requires 2,000 hours; BCBA concentrated requires 1,500; BCaBA supervised requires 1,300; and BCaBA concentrated requires either 1,000 (pre-2027) or 800 (2027+). These numbers are non-negotiable — you must reach your pathway's total before you can apply for the certification exam.

Every other compliance requirement — supervision percentages, unrestricted ratios, monthly caps — is measured relative to your total. Understanding your target total from day one allows you to plan your fieldwork timeline realistically. At 20 hours per month minimum, a BCBA candidate on the supervised track needs at minimum 100 months to finish at the bare minimum pace. Most candidates complete their hours in 18 to 30 months by logging significantly more than the minimum each month.

Why This Matters

Your total hour requirement is the first thing to know when planning your fieldwork. It determines how long your fieldwork period will take and directly affects every compliance calculation.

Examples

  • BCBA Supervised Fieldwork: 2,000 total hours required
  • BCBA Concentrated Fieldwork: 1,500 total hours required
  • BCaBA Supervised Fieldwork: 1,300 total hours required
  • BCaBA Concentrated Fieldwork: 1,000 hours (pre-2027) or 800 hours (2027+)
