Certification

BCaBA

Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst. The mid-level certification from the BACB for professionals who practice under the supervision of a BCBA. Requires a bachelor's degree and fewer fieldwork hours than the BCBA.

Definition

BCaBA stands for Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst, a mid-level certification from the BACB designed for professionals who practice behavior analysis under the supervision of a BCBA. To earn this credential, candidates need a bachelor's degree in behavior analysis or a related field, completion of the required fieldwork hours, and a passing score on the BCaBA certification examination.

The key distinction between a BCaBA and a BCBA is the supervision requirement after certification. While BCBAs practice independently, BCaBAs must always work under the oversight of a BCBA. This does not diminish the value of the credential — BCaBAs play critical roles in service delivery, particularly in clinical settings where they implement programs designed by their supervising BCBA and contribute to data-driven decision making.

Fieldwork requirements for BCaBA candidates are less intensive than for BCBA candidates. Depending on the pathway, you will need 1,300 hours (supervised), 1,000 hours (concentrated, pre-2027), or 800 hours (concentrated, 2027+). The unrestricted activity minimum is also lower at 40%, compared to 60% for BCBA candidates. These reduced thresholds acknowledge the supervised nature of BCaBA practice while still ensuring candidates develop meaningful clinical competence during their fieldwork.

Why This Matters

BCaBA candidates have lower hour requirements and a lower unrestricted activity ratio minimum, but they must work under BCBA supervision after certification.

  • A bachelor's-level professional completing 1,300 hours of supervised fieldwork
  • A BCaBA working under a BCBA's oversight at a clinical site
