Certification

BCBA

Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The advanced-level certification from the BACB for professionals who independently practice behavior analysis. Requires a graduate degree, fieldwork hours (2,000 supervised or 1,500 concentrated), and passing a certification exam.

Definition

BCBA stands for Board Certified Behavior Analyst, the advanced-level professional certification issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). To earn this credential, candidates must hold a graduate degree (master's or doctoral) in behavior analysis or a related field, complete the required number of supervised fieldwork hours, and pass the BCBA certification examination. It is the most widely recognized credential in the field of applied behavior analysis.

BCBA certification authorizes you to practice behavior analysis independently. This means you can design and oversee behavior intervention programs, conduct assessments, supervise others (including BCaBAs, RBTs, and fieldwork trainees), and bill for services under your own credential. The independence distinction is what separates the BCBA from the BCaBA, which requires ongoing supervision by a BCBA.

The fieldwork requirements for BCBA certification are the most demanding of the BACB credentials. Depending on your chosen pathway, you will need either 2,000 hours (supervised fieldwork) or 1,500 hours (concentrated fieldwork), with at least 60% of those hours coming from unrestricted activities. This higher unrestricted threshold reflects the expectation that BCBAs will spend the majority of their careers in direct clinical and supervisory roles.

Why This Matters

BCBA is the primary certification most fieldwork candidates are working toward. It requires more hours and a higher unrestricted activity ratio than the BCaBA credential.

  • A practicing BCBA supervising trainees pursuing their own certification
