Supervision Percentage
What this means
At least 5% of your fieldwork hours must be supervised by a qualified BCBA or BCBA-D. This applies to supervised fieldwork and is measured in each supervisory period, which is one calendar month, not cumulatively. A month that falls short cannot be averaged out by a stronger month later.
How it's calculated
Within each month: supervised hours ÷ your countable hours that month × 100. Must be ≥ 5%.
Common mistakes
Treating supervision like a running total you can catch up on later. It is judged month by month, so a month below 5% stays below no matter how strong the next month is.

Group Supervision Cap
What this means
No more than 50% of your supervised hours can come from group supervision sessions. Group supervision is defined as supervision conducted with 2 or more trainees present simultaneously.

Group supervised hours ÷ Total supervised hours × 100. Must be ≤ 50%.
Common mistakes
Over-relying on group supervision because it's easier to schedule. By the time you realize you've exceeded 50%, you need to log many more individual supervision hours to bring the ratio back down.

Monthly Hour Cap
What this means
No more than 130 fieldwork hours in a single calendar month count toward your total. The BACB sets this to keep fieldwork paced rather than crammed. You can still log what you actually worked; hours above the cap simply do not count that month.
How it's calculated
Sum of all fieldwork hours in a calendar month. Must be ≤ 130.
Common mistakes
Trying to cram hours at the end of your fieldwork period. If you hit 130 mid-month, no additional hours can be counted until the next month.

Monthly Minimum
What this means
You must log at least 20 fieldwork hours per month during any month you are actively accumulating fieldwork. This ensures ongoing, consistent fieldwork engagement.
How it's calculated
Sum of all fieldwork hours in a calendar month. Must be ≥ 20 in active months.
Common mistakes
Taking a month off without formally pausing your fieldwork, or logging only 15-19 hours and assuming it counts.

Unrestricted Hour Ratio
What this means
At least 40% of your total fieldwork hours must be in unrestricted activities: the analytic work such as assessment, program design, data analysis, report writing, and training others.

(Independent unrestricted + Supervised unrestricted) ÷ Total hours × 100. Must be ≥ 40%.
Common mistakes
Spending too much time on restricted delivery work (running sessions, implementing plans) without enough unrestricted analytic work. The 40% threshold is cumulative and hard to recover from late in fieldwork.

Supervision Contacts
What this means
You must have at least 4 supervision contacts per month. A supervision contact is a real-time meeting with your supervisor to discuss your fieldwork, cases, and professional development. Each contact must last at least 15 minutes.

Count of supervision contact sessions flagged in a calendar month. Must be ≥ 4.
Common mistakes
Forgetting to flag supervision sessions as "contacts" when logging hours, even when they qualify. The contact count is separate from supervision hours.

Observations
What this means
Your supervisor must conduct direct observations of your fieldwork at regular intervals. Under pre-2027 standards, observations are count-based per supervision period.

Scheduling observations too infrequently or forgetting to log them. Observations must be flagged separately from regular supervision.

You need 1,300 total fieldwork hours under pre-2027 standards. This is 700 fewer hours than the BCBA supervised pathway (2,000 hours).
What is the unrestricted hour ratio for BCaBA?
BCaBA requires 40% unrestricted hours (compared to 60% for BCBA). This reflects the different scope of practice, BCaBAs work under BCBA supervision and have a narrower range of unrestricted activities.
How is BCaBA fieldwork different from BCBA fieldwork?

Can I upgrade from BCaBA to BCBA later?
