Group Supervision
A supervision format where a qualified supervisor meets with multiple trainees simultaneously. Group supervision is capped at 50% of total supervised hours to ensure each trainee receives adequate individualized attention.
Definition
Group supervision is a supervision format where a qualified supervisor meets with two or more trainees at the same time. These sessions serve a dual purpose: they provide supervision hours that count toward your requirements, and they offer a collaborative learning environment where you can benefit from hearing about your peers' cases, challenges, and approaches to clinical problems.
The BACB caps group supervision at 50% of your total supervised hours. This means that no matter how many group sessions you attend, at least half of your supervision must come from individual, one-on-one meetings with your supervisor. The cap is designed to ensure that each trainee receives sufficient personalized attention and feedback throughout their fieldwork experience.
Group supervision works best when it is structured and facilitated intentionally. Effective group sessions might include case presentations, role-plays, data review exercises, or discussions of ethical scenarios. They are less effective when they become unstructured conversations or when one trainee dominates the discussion. If your group supervision sessions feel like they are not contributing to your growth, talk to your supervisor about adjusting the format — the quality of these sessions matters as much as the hours they contribute.
Why This Matters
Group supervision can be an efficient way to learn from peers and discuss cases, but relying on it too heavily can push you past the 50% cap and invalidate excess hours.
Examples
- A weekly group meeting with your supervisor and 3 other trainees to review cases
- A monthly journal club led by your supervisor with all supervisees
