Group Supervision Cap

The maximum proportion of supervised hours that can come from group supervision sessions. Across all BACB pathways, group supervision is capped at 50% of total supervised hours.

Definition

The group supervision cap limits the proportion of your supervised hours that can come from group supervision sessions. Across all BACB pathways and standards — BCBA and BCaBA, pre-2027 and 2027+, supervised and concentrated — the cap is set at 50%. This means that at least half of your total supervised hours must come from individual, one-on-one supervision with your qualified supervisor.

The cap is designed to protect the quality of your supervision experience. In group settings, your supervisor's attention is divided among multiple trainees. While group supervision offers valuable peer learning opportunities, it cannot fully replace the depth of individualized feedback, tailored clinical guidance, and focused competency assessment that individual supervision provides.

Exceeding the group supervision cap does not trigger an immediate error or warning — the excess hours simply are not counted toward your supervision percentage. This creates a subtle but serious compliance risk. If you have 80 supervised hours and 50 of them are from group sessions, only 40 group hours count (50% of 80). Your effective supervision total drops to 70 hours (30 individual + 40 group), which could push your supervision percentage below the minimum without any obvious red flag. Tracking your group-to-individual ratio proactively is the only way to catch this before it becomes a problem.

Why This Matters

This cap ensures that trainees receive enough individualized attention from their supervisor. If you exceed the cap, the excess group hours will not count toward your supervision percentage.

Examples

  • With 100 supervised hours total, no more than 50 can be from group supervision
  • Exceeding the cap means you need more individual supervision to compensate
