BACB 2025 Data: The Field Is Growing Faster Than Its Pipeline

The BACB 2025 data is out: 246,109 RBTs, 81,566 BCBAs, and a first-time BCBA exam pass rate that fell to 51 percent. What the numbers mean if you are in the pipeline.

Each year the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® publishes data on how many people hold its credentials and how they perform on its exams. The 2025 numbers are out, and they tell a clear story: demand for behavior analysts is climbing fast, and the certification pipeline that feeds it is under real strain.

Here is what stood out, with the numbers straight from the BACB®’s own reporting.

The 2025 numbers at a glance

  • 246,109 RBT®s at the end of 2025, up from 89,122 in 2020.
  • 81,566 BCBA®s, crossing 80,000 for the first time.
  • 51 percent first-time BCBA® exam pass rate, down from 66 percent in 2020.
  • 5,171 BCaBA®s, a middle tier that is quietly shrinking.

The field has never been bigger

At the end of 2025 there were 246,109 credentialed RBT®s, up from 196,579 a year earlier and just 89,122 at the end of 2020. That is nearly a threefold increase in five years. BCBA®s crossed the 80,000 mark for the first time, finishing the year at 81,566, close to double the 44,025 of 2020.

Credential (year-end)202020242025
RBT®89,122196,579246,109
BCBA®44,02574,12581,566
BCaBA®4,7295,4795,171

Demand is not slowing. In 2025 there were 164,015 RBT® exam administrations, a 19 percent jump over 2024, and more than 82,000 people earned the RBT® credential during the year. For anyone hiring in this space, the numbers confirm what you already feel: the workforce is expanding at a pace few healthcare-adjacent fields can match.

But the BCBA exam is getting harder to pass

This is the number that deserves more attention than it will get. The first-time pass rate for the BCBA® exam fell to 51 percent in 2025. Five years earlier it was 66 percent. That is a 15-point decline, and it compounds: candidates who fail their first attempt pass on retake just 23 percent of the time.

First-time administrations9,9119,955
Retake administrations11,78013,196
First-time pass rate54%51%
Retake pass rate25%23%

Look at the administrations. Retakes now outnumber first-time attempts, and 2025 was the second year running that they did: 13,196 retakes against 9,955 first-time exams, after 11,780 against 9,911 in 2024. Nearly six in ten BCBA® exams taken in 2025 were retakes.

There are competing explanations. The candidate pool has broadened as the field has grown, and rapid expansion tends to pull in candidates with more variable preparation. Exam content and standards have evolved. Graduate programs and supervised experiences vary widely in quality. Probably all of these are true at once. But whatever the cause, the practical takeaway is the same: the margin for error has narrowed. The candidates who succeed treat the whole journey, from coursework through fieldwork through exam prep, as one continuous process rather than a series of boxes to check.

The BCaBA is quietly disappearing

While RBT® and BCBA® numbers surge, the middle tier keeps shrinking. BCaBA® certificants climbed to about 5,600 by 2021 and have since drifted down to 5,171. Only about 1,000 people earned the credential in 2025, in a year when more than 82,000 earned the RBT®. The field is consolidating into two tiers: a large technician workforce and a growing but strained analyst tier, with less and less in between. That has real implications for supervision ratios, career laddering, and how organizations structure clinical teams.

What this means if you are in the pipeline

If you are one of the thousands of trainees accruing fieldwork hours toward BCBA® certification, the data carries a clear message. The exam is the single biggest filter in the field, and the quality of your preparation before test day, including the quality of your supervised fieldwork, matters more than it ever has. A few things worth holding onto:

  • Treat your fieldwork like it counts, because it does. Unrestricted hours, meaningful supervision contacts, and documentation that would survive an audit are not bureaucratic hurdles. They are the structure of your professional development.
  • Do not let documentation problems add risk to an already hard process. With a 51 percent first-time pass rate, the exam is challenge enough. Discovering a gap in your records when you go to apply should never be the thing that delays you. Our guide to choosing a fieldwork tracker covers what to look for.
  • Know which rules apply to you. The BACB® has announced 2027 requirement changes. If your timeline puts you near that boundary, sort out which standard applies now, not later. Our certification pathways break down each one.

And if you are an RBT® earning hours toward certification, the same discipline applies to your ongoing supervision, which you can now track free alongside your fieldwork. See the RBT supervision requirements for the monthly details.

The bottom line

The 2025 data shows a field with enormous momentum and real growing pains. A quarter million RBT®s. More than 80,000 BCBA®s. And a certification exam that half of first-time candidates do not pass. The opportunity in ABA has never been larger. Neither has the value of doing the preparation right.
