Compliance Rules Explained

Every rule for this pathway broken down. What it means, how it's calculated, and common mistakes to avoid.

Total Training Hours

What this means

RBT certification requires a 40-hour training that meets the BACB's RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, completed in no less than 5 and no more than 180 days. Your training provider may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.

How it's calculated

Sum of all training hours. Must equal or exceed 40 hours.

Common mistakes

Trying to compress the training: the BACB requires the 40 hours to span at least 5 days, and the whole training must be completed within 180 days.

How ABA FT will handle this

When RBT support ships, ABA Fieldwork Tracker will track your cumulative training hours and show clear progress toward the 40-hour goal on your dashboard.

Ongoing Supervision (After Certification)

What this means

Once certified, an RBT must receive ongoing supervision for at least 5% of the hours spent providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month. The 40-hour training itself is a curriculum requirement, not supervised fieldwork, and carries no supervision percentage.

How it's calculated

Supervised hours ÷ hours providing behavior-analytic services in the calendar month × 100. Must be ≥ 5% each month.

Common mistakes

Confusing the 40-hour training with supervised fieldwork. Training hours are not fieldwork hours, and the 5% ongoing supervision applies to service hours after certification.

How ABA FT will handle this

The planned RBT pathway will track monthly service hours and supervision together, so the 5% minimum is visible at a glance.

Competency Assessment

What this means

After completing the 40-hour training, and no more than 90 days before you submit your application, you complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a Responsible Assessor. The assessing certificant may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.

How it's calculated

Completed with your assessor no more than 90 days before you apply for RBT certification.

Common mistakes

Completing the assessment more than 90 days before you submit your application; it must fall inside that window.

How ABA FT will handle this

When RBT support ships, ABA Fieldwork Tracker will notify you when you reach 40 hours and provide documentation to present to your assessor.

How ABA FT will handle this pathway

Will track all 40 training hours with automatic running totals
Will log your training sessions and running totals through the 40-hour curriculum
Will show clear progress toward the 40-hour completion goal
Will generate documentation you can present for your RBT application

Frequently Asked Questions

How many hours do I need for RBT certification?

A 40-hour training that meets the BACB's RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. This is significantly less than the BCBA (2,000 hours) or BCaBA (1,300 hours) fieldwork totals.

Does ABA Fieldwork Tracker support RBT tracking?

Not yet. ABA Fieldwork Tracker currently supports BCBA and BCaBA fieldwork. Dedicated RBT certification pathway support is planned on our roadmap.

Do I need a supervisor for RBT training?

The 40-hour training is delivered by a training provider (who may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you); it is a curriculum requirement rather than supervised fieldwork. Ongoing supervision starts once you are certified: at least 5% of the hours you spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month must be supervised.

What happens after I complete 40 RBT training hours?

You complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a Responsible Assessor (no more than 90 days before applying), pass criminal background and abuse registry checks, submit your application, and take the RBT exam, which is based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.). When RBT support ships, ABA Fieldwork Tracker will generate documentation to support your application.

Can I use the same tracker for RBT and later for BCBA?

ABA Fieldwork Tracker supports all 8 BCBA and BCaBA pathways today, and RBT tracking is planned. You can begin tracking your BCBA or BCaBA fieldwork now, with RBT support on our roadmap for your RBT phase.
