RBTs and their requirements: where things stand

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT®s) deliver most of the direct ABA services in the United States, and the RBT credential is where many people first enter the field. If you are working as an RBT, you have your own certification and supervision requirements, and they are worth understanding clearly, whether you plan to stay in the role or move toward BCBA® or BCaBA® certification later.

What RBT certification requires

RBT certification is built around a focused set of requirements. Unlike BCBA and BCaBA fieldwork, which runs into the thousands of hours, the RBT path centers on a 40-hour training rather than a long fieldwork period.

• 40 hours of training. You complete a 40-hour training that meets the BACB® RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, in no less than 5 and no more than 180 days. Your training provider may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.
• Ongoing supervision after certification. Once certified, at least 5% of the hours you spend providing behavior-analytic services each calendar month must be supervised. The 40-hour training itself is a curriculum requirement, not supervised fieldwork.
• Initial Competency Assessment. After your training, and no more than 90 days before you apply, you complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment with a Responsible Assessor, who may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by you.
• Background checks. A criminal background check and an abuse registry check are required, no more than 180 days before you pay for your application.
• The RBT exam. Once the above are complete, you take the RBT exam through the BACB®, based on the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.).

After certification, RBTs have ongoing renewal and supervision requirements to maintain the credential. Always check the current BACB® RBT Handbook for the authoritative details, since requirements can change.

What every month asks of a working RBT

The requirement that never goes away is ongoing supervision. In each calendar month you provide behavior-analytic services, at least 5% of those hours must be supervised, across at least two real-time contacts (at least one of them individual), with at least one direct observation of you working with a client. It resets every month, it is met separately at each organization you work for, and the records are kept for seven years. Why documentation habits matter

Even though your RBT requirements are simpler than BCBA or BCaBA fieldwork, the habits are the same, and building them now pays off later. The candidates who struggle most with fieldwork are usually the ones learning to document for the first time while also trying to meet complex compliance rules.

Three habits are worth starting early: log consistently rather than reconstructing hours from memory, learn how activities are categorized, and get comfortable working under a supervisor's review. If you move on to BCBA or BCaBA fieldwork, that experience gives you a real head start.
